Information Commons and Cafetorium
Client: Town of Brookline
Location: Brookline, MA
A new major renovation and reprogramming of an existing K-8 school, this project established a new school identity through the reconstruction of the entrance and cafeteria common spaces. The mandate to improve the function of the existing cafeteria became the impetus for rethinking the space as the new heart of school activity. By subdividing the space into three interconnected but visually open dining rooms, the institutional cafeteria is made more intimate while, at the same time, still allowing larger and varied functions to happen. A new sloped ceiling system conceals existing utility lines and maintains a feeling of height in a previously basement-like space.
